Which Test Won has a great new test comparing the impact of two different images on conversion.
This week's test - Email Landing Page A/B Test: Which Image Convinced More Age 30+ Consumers to Enter Their Contact Info? This was a great example of an A/B test where everything was the same except the image.
There were likely several factors that affected the results including:
- The model (and age of the model)
- The activity (swimming vs. lifting weights)
- Authenticity (which image was more believable)
- The angle of the shot
This last factor is especially interesting, as one commenter noted:
The swimming pool shot, you’re looking down on the guy (emotionally detached). The gym shot, you’re at eye level (emotionally on the same level, engaged) with the subject.
Never underestimate the power of your images and the affect they can have on your conversion rate.

Thanks for putting this article up - it was a revalation! It was amazing to see how just a little adjustent here or there was rewarded with such a big uplift in results.
I took about an hour out of my day to work back through some of the previous A/B tests to see whether I would pick the winner. Result: quite a lot stil to learn.
Thanks for this, keep up the great work.
Kind regards
Charles Stevenson

I'd definitely go for the gym shot, I think the guy in the swimming pool is TOO perfect physicaly and I think it's fake.
